The Next Steps for NYIVA

We’re happy to welcome Laura Regan, owner/operator of Footlight Presents in Ridgewood Queens & founding member of The Neighborhood Venue Alliance, who has been asked to joined the board and will be managing communications moving forward for NYIVA. We know its been quiet for a while, we were regrouping and planning and are now setting forth on a new path as a trade organization to advocate for our industries needs within the state and local governments.

We’ve retained a lobbyist, Cozen, and are working on strategy as well as meeting with many elected officials to address our current concerns and issues. What we learned during the pandemic is that the live performing arts industry in New York State does not have the same sway as it does in other states and cities - and we aim to change that.

We know a lot of you are still struggling post pandemic, but also just in general our industry is really challenged in our state and we are looking forward to advocating for your needs. We’ll be resuming our monthly Zoom calls where we’ll share concerns, resources and host panelists and speakers with leaders in our industry to educate us as well as legislators to engage with them on the issues that uniquely affect our independent performing arts operations in New York State.

Next ZOOM meeting for members: Thursday May 18th, 1PM

As we continue to evolve as an organization, NYIVA has begun shaping our investment in initiatives in particular those that enable “Place keeping” and “Placemaking” for independent venue spaces and promotional opportunities.

Here’s a list of a few interesting reads regarding recent legislation and current initiatives we should all keep our eyes on and support the best we can because these issues could directly impact our industry moving forward.

Legislation:

Council Member Keith Powers proposed  Ticketing Legislation: Disclosure of service fee charges associated with tickets to entertainment events in NYC.
NY Senate Bill Proposes Commercial Vacancy Tax
Commercial Rent Stabilizations

NYC Office of Nightlife , Nightlife Advisory Board, NYC Office of Nightlife Annual Report 2022

Funding opportunities:

The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), The New York State Council on the Arts
New York State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI)

Looking forward to seeing our members on Zoom next week.
